Downtown parking change approved

June 11, 2019--7:56 a.m.

The Rome City Commission voted Monday on second reading to officially implement a new parking plan downtown.

Prior to the vote, the commission heard from Ira Levy, who presented a petition from downtown business owners, asking commissioners to adopt a plan that would allow for three-hour parking, then a four-hour window, then an additional three hours, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

However, the commission opted to go with the plan that was placed onto First Reading during their last meeting.

It sets a three-hour parking limit, consecutive or otherwise, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Commissioner Jamie Doss was the only “No” vote, stating that the two-hour limit has worked for the last 21 years.

He also suggested that the petition from Levy be given to the Downtown Development Authority for study.
