From Floyd County Police:

The officer who shot the occupant of a home on Kingston Highway Thursday morning has been identified as a five year veteran of the Floyd County Police Department.

Carlos Ribot, age 31, was serving a search warrant with the SWAT team at 1933 Kingston Highway on May 23 when a male occupant inside the house began shooting at police.

Officer Ribot returned fire and shot Michael Lee Spears, a known gang member who was subject of a search warrant by the drug unit.

Spears, age 44, had barricaded himself in the residence. Members of the SWAT team were able to render first aid and stabilize the aggressor until EMS could arrive and transport Spears to the hospital.

No officers were injured during the shooting incident.

Ribot is presently on standard administrative leave pending investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

An internal review will also be conducted to determine if training or policy violations exists, however this type of internal examination is common with incidents of this nature.

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Floyd County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting on Kingston Highway, Rome, Floyd County, GA.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 6:20 AM, the Metro Drug Task Force and SWAT team were executing a warrant for drugs and weapons at 1933 Kingston Highway.

The subject, identified as Michael Lee Spears, age 44, had the residence barricaded.

Once officers made entry, Spears fired upon officers.

Officers returned fire, striking Spears.

Members of the SWAT team were able to render first aid until EMS arrived.

Spears was transported to Floyd Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries.

No officers were injured in this incident.

A woman who lives in the residence was also arrested.
